What should my first piece be?
For most people: a mid-size beaker bong plus a grinder, or a simple spoon pipe if you want cheap and pocketable. Beakers are stable, easy to clean, and forgiving for beginners. Avoid huge, fragile percolator showpieces until you know what you actually like.
Bong, pipe, or vaporizer — what's the difference?
A bong filters smoke through water for big, cool, smooth hits (best at home). A dry pipe is cheap, portable, and zero-setup but harsher. A dry herb vaporizer heats instead of burns — cleaner on the lungs and less smell, but costs more upfront. None is “best”; it depends on where and how you’ll use it.
Do I really need a grinder?
Yes — it’s the best value upgrade you can make. An even, fluffy grind burns evenly and wastes less. A 4-piece grinder also has a screen that collects kief (potent pollen) in a bottom chamber. Skip the cheap plastic ones; metal lasts.
What is borosilicate glass and why does it matter?
It’s a heat- and shock-resistant glass that handles temperature changes without cracking. It’s what quality bongs and pipes are made from. Thicker walls (e.g. 5mm) are noticeably more durable than the thin, cheap stuff that chips and breaks.
How much water do I put in a bong?
Enough to submerge the bottom of the downstem by about 1–2 cm. Too much causes splashback into your mouth; too little means no filtration. If your piece has an ice pinch, a cube or two cools the hit further.
How do I clean my bong or pipe?
Use 91%+ isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt (the salt is the abrasive). Pour both in, cap the openings, and shake for 60–90 seconds — soak first if it’s really dirty. Rinse thoroughly with warm water until there’s no alcohol smell, then let it dry. Change bong water after every session to prevent buildup.
How often should I clean it?
Dump and rinse the water after every session. Do a full alcohol-and-salt deep clean about once a week, or sooner if the glass looks cloudy or the hits start tasting off. Clean glass tastes better and hits smoother.
How do I make it smell less?
Combustion smells and lingers — there’s no eliminating it entirely. Reduce it with an airtight, opaque storage jar, good ventilation, and a smoke-trapping filter. A dry herb vaporizer produces far less odor than burning if smell is a big concern.
Is a more expensive piece worth it?
Spend where it counts: a good grinder and a sturdy mid-range bong with thick borosilicate glass. Past a certain point you’re paying for brand, artistry, and elaborate percolators — nice to have, not necessary. Fragile, flashy pieces are easy to break and a waste for a beginner.
What accessories actually matter?
The useful short list: a grinder, a spare bowl (they break), a poker tool, an airtight storage jar, and cleaning supplies (iso + salt). Hemp wick is a nice touch if you dislike butane taste. Most everything else is optional.
